If you send regular email messages to your customer and marketing lists, have you worked out the best time to send?
By this we mean the optimum time to catch the attention of your target audience in their busy schedule. Choosing the right time to send a campaign is important to ensure your email is not put to the bottom of the pile, quickly glanced at or even worse, deleted!
Timing is key!
Advice has often been generic such as don’t send on a Monday morning when businesses are busy and don’t send out of hours or on a Friday afternoon right? Well technically your audience may be more responsive during these times too, which is why you need to test, test, test.
Split testing different times/days can also help you determine the most responsive time for your audience. We recently started marketing to a new prospect list of Decision Makers and wanted to work out when they would respond better to a campaign.
To do this we split test the list over 5 days (Mon-Fri) and staggered the sends throughout the day. The results are to the right.
- Open Rate (%)
On this campaign we found that the best time to send to this list was on a Thursday, as it received nearly a 12% greater open rate than other days. We also found that the most responsive times were between 8am-9am and 11am-12pm.
In future sends to this list we could use this knowledge to determine when will be the best time to send.
We’ve also found that some industries respond better at different times and to begin with it is a case of trying to figure out their routine. There are also some great tools available online that can help you with similar examples.
Some examples we have come across:
- Marketing & Advertising – Fridays 10am
- Telecommunications – Tues 9am
- Recruitment – Weds 10am
- Travel & Tourism – Tues 8am
