Emailmovers at the House of Lords!
On 23rd February, Emailmovers were invited to the House of Lords by the personal invitation of Lord Patel of Bradford.
Our evening began at the Peers Entrance where we were greeted by Lord Patel himself, and then sent through a very high security procedure of metal detectors, x-ray machines and security cameras. Having been deemed OK, we headed off through the House.
Lord Patel was extremely welcoming and took us on a comprehensive tour, telling us about the intriguing history and actions that happen within the walls. We were frankly overwhelmed with both the experience and how friendly Lord Patel was. The tour included sitting in the Chamber during a live debate!
Our night finished off with an evening meal in the Peers Dining Room with Lord Patel himself... oh, and with the President of Pakistan on the next table!

Everything we saw and heard was fascinating and we never stopped talking about our experience all the way back to the hotel... in fact we are still talking about it now in the office!
A most sincere and heartfelt thank you to Lord Patel. |

Terms of the month
Hard Bounce
This usually means that the email address is invalid ( often a typographical error ) or that it no longer exists ( if it ever did in the first place ).
Soft Bounce
The email address does exist but the system has been temporarily unable to deliver the email at this time. It may be that the recipient's mail box is full or that the email address is temporarily unavailable for technical reasons. When the temporary hitch is resolved then messages can once again be sent to these addresses.

Hints and Tips
DESIGN TIP 3 - Images
There are a number of factors to consider when including images in an email.

i) Always use the full path for an image. For example: <img src="http://yoursite.com/image_name.jpg /" alt="image title">
ii) Never put important information into an image
- When designing always think what will the creative look like with the images missing, because this is what most recipients will see before clicking "Download images"
iii) Always use Alt tags. - Never use spam messages in the alt tags, example "Call now to claim your FREE prize".
iv) Keep the image filename neutral - "image1.jpg", title.jpg" etc.
Not: "click_here.jpg", "register.jpg".
v) Always optimise the image
- Try to keep the total email size below 100Kb. Bigger emails might overwhelm your server bandwidth.
vi) Remember that JPEG and GIF are the only image files acceptable for email use.

Useful Links
Every month we include a few links to 3rd party utilities that we feel may be useful to you. Although we test all such links, this is in no way any endorsement of the reliability of these utilities - use them at your own risk.
URL Shortener:
If you would like to shorten an URL, due to it being too long, or you are limited to characters (on a social networking site perhaps?) then an URL shortener is just what you need. There are many services available out there, but here are two examples:
http://bit.ly/ Bit.ly also tracks how many clicks your newly created URL has, which enhances this handy tool.
http://tinyurl.com TinyUrl also allows you to create a custom alias which can be handy in helping you to remember the link.
In order to use these, enter the URL into the text field and click the button. This will then replace your URL with one that has less characters. Then all you need to do is to copy and paste this into wherever you need it and it will take you to the original link.
W3C Markup Validator:
If you want to check the mark up of your web document, whether it is in HTML, XHTML, SMIL, MathML etc then this is appropriate for you:
http://validator.w3.org/
All you need to do is either enter the URL, Upload the file, or enter the document content into the 'Direct Input' and click 'Check'. The validator checks the document using technical specifications of the language it is written in. You will then be given a report showing any warnings or errors, with a description of what needs changing to make your web document valid.

POP3, SMTP and IMAP
Many users are often confused when creating or resetting email accounts. POP3, SMTP, IMAP ?? What does it all mean anyway ? Here are some simple explanations.
POP3 (Post Office Protocol)
POP 3 stands for Post Office Protocol version 3. POP3 is a protocol (language) that is designed for downloading and receiving your e-mail from your Internet Service Provider ( ISP ) to your mail program.
With POP3, your mail is saved in a single mailbox on the server. When you read your mail, it is immediately downloaded to your computer and no longer maintained on the server, and can be modified, read and manipulated offline.
To configure a POP account you need three pieces of information:
- The name of your ISP's mail server that holds your e-mail. Typically it's something like "mail.example.com".
- The name of the account you were assigned by your ISP. This may or may not be your e-mail name, something similar, or something completely unrelated.
- The password to your account.
IMAP Internet Message Access Protocol
IMAP is another Internet standard protocol for retrieving email. Virtually all modem e-mail clients and mail servers support both protocols as a way of transferring e-mail messages from a server.
The protocol receives the email and holds it for you by your Internet server. You can then view the heading and the sender, and then decide whether you want to download the mail.
IMAP allows you to create, organise and manipulate multiple folders or mailboxes on the server, requiring continual access to the server during the time you are working with your mail making IMAP more sophisticated than POP3.
SMTP Simple Mail Transfer Protocol Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), is used for transferring e-mail across the Internet. SMTP is typically used for sending e-mail, POP3 or IMAP being used for receiving e-mail.

Data Appending
Emailmovers can append missing e-business information to a B2B database. Enhancing a database with e-business information allows a business to tailor customer communications and provide relevant promotions to the right audience.
Emailmovers can append a businesses database by using URLs from over 1.5million UK web site addresses available, or use a list of URLs provided and profile sites to find the e-business information required.
Working with your incomplete B2B database, Emailmovers can append missing e-business information which can turn your contact list into a powerful tool. By ensuring that your database is up to date, you also maximise email delivery and add value to your marketing lists.
Emailmovers - Customer Satisfaction
